Farmington - Farmington Daily Times employees received 14 awards on April 9 in the Top of the Rockies Journalism Competition sponsored by the Colorado Professional Chapter of the Association of Professional Journalists.
The awards, in news and essay writing, sports writing, photography, editorial writing and page design during 2021, "are a testament to how hard our reporters have worked covering local news despite the restrictions of the pandemic and the small size of our staff," editor John said. R Moses.
"75 media outlets as well as dozens of freelancers from Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico entered this year's competition, submitting 1,507 entries, an increase of 15% over the 2021 competition," the competition organizers said in the competition announcement. The Daily Times competed in the Medium Newsroom category.
The competition was a real home run for Daily Times sports writer Steve Borstein, who won five of those awards, three for sports news and featured coverage, one for a sports column, and second place on Spot News Photography for his photo of firefighters and volunteers. Participate in the annual 9/11 memorial stair climb at Ricketts Park.

Bortstein won #1 in Sports News coverage for his article on new issues facing athletic directors, coaches, and student-athletes across the state as they travel, often long distances, to high school sports while navigating changing COVID-19 policies and rising fuel costs.
The Daily Times won 11 awards in the NMPA Better Newspaper competition
Bortstein placed third in the same Sports News category for a story about the Enid Majors baseball team that won their first Connie Mack World Series last year.
Ranked second in Sports Columns for his analysis of how athletes of all ages and skill levels face mental health challenges - and the need for communication to address these issues and reverse any stigmas associated with getting help.
He finished off his victories by winning third place in the Athletic Features category for a story about the successes of Piedra Vista High School student Jackson Harpool, at the Aztec Speedway.
Daily Times reporter Noel Lynn Smith took first place, winning first place for her photo of two sisters taking part in a Memorial Day celebration in Shipbrook last year. The judge's comment was "Effective!"
Reporter Mike Easterling also collected several awards, one of which won second place with former employee Hannah Grover for public reporting, series or package for a multi-part series on San Juan County's economic and social recovery about a year after the pandemic began. The series was called San Juan Rebuilds.
Easterling also won third place in features: Long Form for a feature on the scientists who discovered the fossilized skull of Parasaurolophus cyrtocristatus at Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness in 2017, and third place at Arts & Entertainment for ''Mama Mia opened a month-long track in Coliseum Lions Wilderness Park Amphitheater".
The Farmington Daily Times has won awards for page design and overall quality
Former Daily Times reporter Josh Kellogg received a runner-up award for Beat Reporting for his coverage of crime news and social services.
Kellogg also came in second on Breaking News Story for his coverage of a man arrested after throwing a Molotov cocktail at police.
Editor John R. Moses won an editorial runner-up for an editorial on public document destruction carried out by a government agency and the need for a prosecutor's investigation.
Moses also won second place in Business News for coverage of the cooling tower collapse at the San Juan power plant, and state regulators' response to staying in the dark for some time about the structural failure.
Finally, Gannett Design Studio took home a second place award for the graphic design of a sports page.
