Windows 10, by default, automatically sets the width of the folder for you. It does this based on the type of file within a specific folder. What this means is that if you populate a folder with one type of file, all of your files will automatically be set to a certain view when you revisit or update the folder.



This can be an annoying problem if you have all your files neatly (read: anxiously) organized into many, many folders and subfolders. So what if you could change the way Windows 10 displays files in folders based on type? Fortunately, there is an easy solution.





How to change folder view overall in Windows 10 File Explorer


This is one of the many Windows 10 File Explorer tricks and tweaks that you can use to get more of your work done. To change the folder view in Windows 10 globally, you have to first set up things in a specific folder.


  1. Navigate to a folder containing the files you want to view in a specific style.
  2. View the default Windows 10 file
    You can change other factors depending on the specific point of view. For example, in the detailed view of Windows, you can add, remove, and resize columns. These options will then be applied to all folders containing files of the same type.

  1. Download the zip file from the link above, extract it, and then run the WinSetView.hta case.
  2. Select the language you want to use. This option should default to the language you chose when installing Windows 10, but you can change it here.
  3. Set the language in WinSetView
    under my world Option, select the width you want for most of your folders. If you choose any of the Icons Options, you can adjust the size manually by typing it in the box on the right.
