Tales from the Farm: The Illustrated and the Rising Sun

Her name is Sunshine. She was born on a very sunny day to her mother, a unicorn. The name unicorn came from the characteristic color of its tail. It’s a very white tail on a strawberry blonde lover. Sunshine inherited her mother’s unusual color.

You may be wondering about the names. They came from our granddaughters. Apparently, we are not creative enough in our choices. The unicorn’s sister, the princess, will give birth to her little one soon. The name has already been selected. Venus will be here before you read this column.

Our granddaughter, Little Miss and little sister, was visiting from town. We spent them alone for four days and nights. This brought me back to the memories of the seemingly endless days of chores, mixed with raising children, long ago. I remember it was a frustrating and busy time with their mother and sister. I was exhausted then, and it turns out that hasn’t changed. It feels great when you fall into bed with your little hand resting on your hand from the bed next to him. Kids and farming are a great combination, and many life and skill lessons are captured. These lessons and skills will carry them through their lives.

My husband (known as My Hero) is now retired, so this grandmother has a lot of help. It worked very well. I have to brag a little here. They call the farm “home” (our plan works) and we’re very good at this job. Patience is required with a small child. You may have forgotten about those unexpected mood swings. We only have time now, so I guess our job is just to enjoy our time together and let the parents take care of the hard stuff. My hero had to help out with some math homework. Teach our children and teach them well. My strong suit is storytelling and photography, and the fact that I never really matured really helps. Fun is fun.

Little Miss brought her camera and would take pictures whenever she got the chance. She has a keen eye. I’m my proud grandmother. It has many pictures of the farm and its residents. Little Miss wanted to get a picture of Sunshine in the bush. Since her mom is a first time mom, we didn’t allow girls near them. They’re cute, but we didn’t want to scare either side. This works fine.

The next day, Sunshine and Mom followed all of our cows to the field behind the house. A little sunshine, after eating, lie down on a patch of grass and sleep away today. The girls were thrilled that they could see her all day from our kitchen window. When the daylight hours began to disappear, all the cows returned to the bush to eat their hay. The sun slept quietly by the open gate and wasn’t worried about being there alone.

As the eight o’clock approached, the girls became a little worried that the unicorn must have forgotten about the Sunshine. Grandma to the rescue. I put on my coat and jumped over the fence. She then persuaded Sunshine to stand in the side road while the field gate closed. She was very happy to do so. It was so soft, I just wanted to hold it tight. I started walking her down the path to the bush where her family might have been looking for her.

When I looked behind us, there was a truck following. Grandpa had two smiling girls coming to help. They slowly drove behind Sunshine and I. Halfway through, Sunshine must have found the scent that she sought to return to her family. I started running into the bush. I started calling COBOSS… COBOSS. The next thing I knew, the cows were running back down the aisle to meet Sunshine and I.

The sunshine roared loudly and then the unicorn moose roared loudly. The happiest of endings were when I watched Little Miss, Little Sister, my grandfather and I Sunshine eat her dinner, greetings to her mother, surrounded by a happy family. There were tails wagging and smiling all over.
