DDR5 is the next step for computer memory, after DDR4. The previous generation of RAM has not been around for a long time and we are already seeing new processors that support DDR5. Unfortunately, DDR5 and DDR4 modules cannot be replaced, which means that you cannot use a DDR4 RAM module on a DDR5 motherboard or vice versa. Clock speeds and latency ratings also vary widely between DDR4 and DDR5, which makes the process of choosing the right combination of RAM even more confusing. This is where the DDR5 Buyer's Guide comes into play.

Upgrade to DDR5:
GeIL Polaris RGB Sync DDR5-4800 32 GB

Staff selection

If you want one of the first kits to hit the market, look no further than GeIL Polaris RGB Sync DDR5 RAM. We were impressed with its clean design, RGB lighting effects, and noticeable improvements over DDR4. This kit contains 16GB DDR5-4800MT/s sticks for a total of 32GB, and comes with a lifetime warranty to protect your investment.

DDR5 RAM:
XPG Lancer DDR5-6000 32GB

If you want some really big numbers to come out, the Lancer set from XPG includes two 16GB sticks of 32GB DDR5-6000MT/s RAM. We found that while higher speeds are a huge improvement over DDR4, this group (like other DDR5 RAMs) has a fairly high CL40 latency, although you should still notice a significant improvement overall. Also, their prices are competitive.

Revenge in DDR5:
Corsair Revenge DDR5-5200 32GB

Corsair's Vengeance RAM is one of the most popular, and it's now available in DDR5. This kit contains two 16GB sticks for a total of 32GB of DDR5-5200MT/s with CL38 timing. It's also a more subtle design, if you're not interested in turning your PC into a festive light show.

Affordable DDR5:
Crucial DDR5-4800 32GB

DDR5 is very expensive. This crucial set with two 16 GB sticks (32 GB total) isn't cheap, but it's cheaper compared to the competition. It offers a 4800MHz clock, a lifetime warranty, and a simple design without heatsink, which is ideal for architectures meant for more than just work.

Picking the Best DDR5 RAM for Your PC

There are countless combinations of DDR5 RAM available, but the choice largely comes down to how much you are willing to spend and how fast you need the memory. DDR5 is a big upgrade over DDR4 (see our comparison of DDR4 vs. DDR5) but the new generation has some time to mature before we see significant performance gains.

Right now, the best DDR5 RAM kit could be the one that fits your budget, has low enough latency (CL40 seems to be the standard for current DDR5 kits), and has fast memory speeds. Anything above 5,000 MT/sec and you'll be about to set sail. We've seen some ridiculous numbers with DDR5 RAM and things will only get better as manufacturers look to push the boundaries even further.

DDR5 RAM is great for gaming, especially when paired with 12th generation Intel processors.
