Apple TV Mega Series 'Metropolis' to be Filmed in Australia



Apple TV+'s epic series “Metropolis,” inspired by Fritz Lang's classic silent period sci-fi, will be filmed in Australia. It is expected to benefit extensively from a new 'virtual manufacturing' structure that is among the largest in the world.


“Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail is the writer, director, and showrunner of the eight-part project. It is being produced by NBCUniversal's Universal Studio Group.


The story takes place in the futuristic city of Metropolis. The city's wealthy elite enjoy a lavish life of comfort and convenience in the lofts and pleasure gardens, while numerous workers work on dangerous machinery in the bowels of the city to keep everything running. Freder Fredersen, the son of Metropolis' most powerful man, wakes up after meeting a young worker named Maria and witnessing the deaths of many workers in a work accident.




The project has been approved to receive grant funding from the Victorian Screen Incentive, managed by VicScreen, the state of Victorian film industry support organization. It will likely be eligible for federal production incentives administered by Screen Australia.


The Victorian state government also supports the “Metropolis” by supporting the construction of state-of-the-art virtual production infrastructure, including one of the largest permanent 'LED volumes' - high-tech digital screens that display background environments and visual effects. Set.


Such virtual production techniques were used in the “Star Wars” spin-off series “The Mandalorian,” and infrastructure is being built in production centers around the world. After use by “Metropolis”, the Victoria LED space will remain in place for use by other international productions and local films and series.


VicScreen said "Metropolis" is the first in a series of projects that NBCU is expected to inject A$416 million ($xxx million) directly into Victoria's economy over the next few years.


"Metropolis" alone is expected to create 3,980 local jobs, including 500 Victorian staff and crew and more than 2,400 extras. Around 600 Victorian businesses and service providers will benefit from local production.

NBCU's "La Brea" and "Clickbait" series were filmed in Victoria. The science fiction drama “Foe,” directed by Garth Davis and starring Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal, has recently been completed. Local director Michael Gracey is currently in the state preparing to shoot Robbie Williams' biopic "Better Man."
