Xbox officially reveals the Tartan controller, a limited-edition Series X controller with an authentic Scottish kilt on its faceplate.
Over the more than 20 years since the original Xbox debuted in 2001, Microsoft’s flagship gaming brand has seen no shortage of unique and striking designs for both its consoles and controllers. Xbox has released a plethora of unique controller designs that break the mold of conventional controllers and take the handheld peripherals in all sorts of unusual directions from ergonomic enhancements and changes to wild appearances like the recent fuzzy controllers to commemorate Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s premiere. Now, Xbox’s newest limited-edition controller takes a bit of inspiration from Scottish heritage.
Some of the Xbox line’s most unique creations have come from the giveaways the company frequently holds on social media. Past giveaways have featured Xbox partnering up to celebrate massive game releases like Diablo 2: Resurrected‘s Xbox Series X featuring a statuette of the titular antagonist on the console as well as a themed Year of the Tiger design to ring in the 2022 Lunar New Year. Now, Xbox has revealed a partnership with Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers to create a hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind Xbox controller complete with real tartan fabric.
A short video uploaded to Xbox’s official UK Twitter account gives fans a first look at the Tartan controller crafted with authentic tartan kilt fabric with the help of the Edinburgh-based kiltmakers. The video features interviews with Nicolson and kilt maker Emma discussing the opportunity to work with Xbox on the controller and shows off the process of manufacturing the kilt cover for the controller with the design bearing Xbox’s iconic green-and-black color scheme. Xbox UK also hinted at a giveaway for the Scottish-inspired controller at a later date, referencing future updates to come through the game company’s Twitter.
While no details have been given on the giveaway to come for the Tartan controller, Xbox’s newest promotion featuring a heavily region-based controller would not be the first time Microsoft has given away a uniquely regional controller. Last year, Xbox Canada held a similar giveaway for a buffalo plaid Xbox controller inspired by the Canadian Rockies with several other games being given away as secondary prizes through the giveaway. Xbox UK’s giveaway of the Tartan controller may also feature secondary games provided by Xbox’s UK-based affiliates, where the Canadian giveaway featured titles from EA Sports and Ubisoft among others.
Xbox’s newest controller comes at a time that has seen Xbox hardware on the rise as the Series X has been off to a strong start throughout early 2022. A report from market research company The NPD Group showed that Xbox Series X sales in March set an all -time record for Xbox sales and led all console sales last month while Xbox reported that its own console market share has beaten main rival Sony throughout the last two quarters. With strong sales numbers and more studios being acquired by the gaming juggernaut, the future looks bright for Xbox.
