As the Russian invasion of Ukraine lasted from days to weeks, attacks destroyed sites of cultural significance. Ukraine’s cultural heritage is under siege, and photographer Anna Senek is one of the creators showing what’s at risk of destruction. Her photos, which she described as “ethnic depictions,” depict people in traditional clothing that showcase Ukraine’s visual heritage, from headdresses to jewelry to patterned dresses.
All costumes displayed in Senik’s work are original, sourced from private collections as well as from museums. She worked with ethnographers, fashion designers, collectors, and helpers to create a catalog of collections displaying traditional motifs, floral headbands, and bead-colored jewelry. It preserves the visual culture of Ukraine while celebrating the beauty of tradition.
Sneak has worked as a photographer for more than 10 years, but she, like many in Ukraine, chose to pivot and serve in armed regional defense and help protect her country during the Russian invasion. “The past year (or rather a year and a half) has been very happy for me,” My ModernMate recalls. “I only focused on art. There was a lot of inspiration, work and travel for my team. In 2021 we made 33 series! Looking back, I realize how valuable and wonderful this time is.”
Snake is not sure when she will be able to return to the art industry. “Under the current circumstances, that’s impossible,” she says. “I evacuated my photo archive to a safe place and dedicated myself to the struggle for my country’s freedom. This was the only possible solution for me. But I really miss the opportunity to take pictures. He has been the meaning of my life, and I look forward to victory and peace to regain.”
Although Snake is on hiatus from her photos, she uses her photography skills as a way to show what is going on in Ukraine from the perspective of her military operations. Follow her on Instagram for updates.
