GoPro just announced a surprising new camera: a stripped-down version of the Hero10 Black called the Hero10 Black Bones. For an extra $50, it weighs a lot less but doesn't come with a battery or screen. Confused? Here's what you need to know.

The original GoPro Hero10 Black costs $499.99 (or $349.99 with a one-year GoPro subscription). It has a rechargeable battery, two front and back screens, is water resistant to 33 feet, and weighs 5.4 ounces.
The GoPro Hero10 Black Bones, on the other hand, costs $499.99 (or $399.98 with a GoPro subscription), has no battery, no screens, and isn't waterproof, but it weighs just 1.9 ounces.
Crucially, they both come with the same great 1/2.3-inch sensor and GP2 processor, in-camera HyperSmooth 4.0 stabilization, and the ability to shoot 5.3K footage at 60 fps, 4K footage at 120 fps, and 2.7K footage at 240 fps per second .
Who is Hero10 Black Bones for?

Well, there's a reason GoPro would strip a load of key features from its main action cam and then charge an extra $50 to save 3.5 ounces.
The Hero10 Black Bones are designed exclusively for first-vision drones (FPV) - the type of drones often used to film footage such as Tesla's recent flight of the Giga factory in Berlin or a video of a drone flying in a bowling alley that caught the virus last year. These drones usually have a low-latency camera attached to a VR headset so the pilot can fly, and a second camera (mostly a GoPro but sometimes a 35mm film camera!) to capture high-quality footage.

In an interview with the edgeGoPro chief product officer Pablo Lima explains that many of these FPV pilots have already taken to cutting parts they consider unnecessary from GoPros in an effort to lighten them up so the drone can stay in the air longer. However, the DIY approach is not without its downsides. According to Lema, this often causes the camera to overheat, especially when taking off or landing.
The Hero10 Black Bones is a GoPro that saves weight for FPV pilots, adding a heatsink and some venting to solve any overheating issues. Sure, as a niche product, it's a bit more expensive, but it still has a warranty unlike the Franken-GoPro that someone took with a knife.
How does the Hero10 Black Bones work without a battery?
In a word: welding.
Hero10 Black Bones are designed to be connected to the drone's battery through the power connector port. It has a built-in regulating circuit so it can run anything from 5V to 27V, depending on the LiPo battery that keeps the drone in the air.
How do you control Hero10 Black Bones?

Since there are no screens, the control of the Hero10 Black Bones is a little different. There are several ways though:
How to buy Hero10 Black Bones
If you're in the US, you can buy the GoPro Hero10 Black Bones now for $399.98 with a Go-Pro subscription, or $499.99 without a subscription. To get the most out of it, though, you'll also need a dedicated FPV drone — and some welding skills.
