Meet Lisa Mara dos Santos, Director of Photography in Los Angeles

hI’m Lisa Mara. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us today. For those who don’t know your business, can you talk a little bit about yourself and how you got started?

Photography has always been in my life since I was a kid. My family loves to get together and capture every moment of our monthly get-togethers. I grew up in a home where art, music, and movies were both passions and hobbies of my parents and relatives.

I started working professionally as a photographer in 2016. I will be assigned to shoot events, concerts, weddings, birthdays, family photos.. all kinds of jobs. During that time I was still in college and also working in a photo lab and producing two TV shows. I was doing that wall and cinematography appeared in between all of that. I got more interested and started working as a director of photography and camera operator on a few short films.

Later and after many collaborations, I moved to Los Angeles to study Cinematography at UCLA and to start my career in the United States. I have worked in more than 60 productions and have been able to meet and work with great professionals.

And now you’re developing your first feature film, right?

This is correct! I’m really excited about it because the first feature film always has a special feeling. The final version of the script is done but we’re still in pre-production, where we get all the crew and money and everything.

The story really connects me and my style of cinematography. It’s about the mother-daughter relationship and how it will bring their childhood memories closer and heal some of their past trauma. It is a brutal and very honest story that shows the strength of both women and all the struggles they have to go through in order to survive in this world.

I try my best to tell stories about women and make their voices heard. I want to make a difference in my work on screen and off screen. Filmmaking must be equal and we must also evolve and make it a safe space for all professionals.

Do you have other projects on the horizon? What can you tell us about that?

yes! I am writing a script for my latest documentary, Ninem. I love documentaries and have worked on a few of them, such as “Territorio” and “The Brave Generation”.

This new being developed will surely be my biggest pride and joy. It will not only be a family reunion, but it will also be a one-way trip down memory lane. My family will go back to the past and talk about their childhood and the impact of my grandmother’s presence in their lives, from the moment they felt her love until her death.

We can note that your family directly affects your business. Can you talk about how it affects the products you’re working on?

I really like to try and work with different types of scripts. Horror, drama, music, romance… I love it all, from commercials to feature films. I have my preferences and stories that captivate me the most but I like challenges and don’t want to just be in my comfort zone. I’m always open to new stories and new collaborations!

At the moment, I am not only working on different productions but also developing my own projects and ideas. This documentary I mentioned is one of them and the story of my family

It not only affects who I am as a person but also as a professional. I feel the older I get, the more aware and proud I am of that. I definitely got my sensitive view of movies because of it, but my goal is definitely to create great stories and make an impact on society.

Can you please tell our readers where they can find your work and keep track of upcoming projects?

If you want to see my work, be sure to follow my Instagram and visit my business to learn more about my new products. I’m currently preparing for three short films, one feature, and overseeing color correction for my latest short project.
