For more than a decade, McPherson College has been encouraging the entrepreneurial ideas of its students by offering small grants that help students develop innovative solutions to common problems. With over 300 scholarships awarded, the college recently announced the newest recipients of its Horizon Fund Grants.
This spring, the Horizon Fund is giving scholarships to 15 students with ideas ranging from car rentals to daycare to fitness training. Individual grants range from $100 to $500 and students have re-apply options to obtain ongoing funding for existing Horizon Fund Grant projects.
“The Horizon Fund scholarship is just one of the many ways McPherson College demonstrates its commitment to entrepreneurship and supports the entrepreneurial students on our campus,” said Abby Archer-Rerson, faculty and chair of the Entrepreneurship Program at McPherson College. The grants have supported a variety of ideas The company has been hugely creative and this latest round of funding is no exception.”
The beneficiaries of the Horizon Fund Spring 2022 grants are:
- Edwin PewterAuto Restoration, Ireton, IA - 24 Hours of Lemons event - “I am planning to race a car in the 24 Hours of Lemons open wheel racing series. We will buy, build, modify, race and repair a car allowing students to develop many valuable skills that they may not have the opportunity to develop in another way ".
- Zoe CarmichaelRaleigh, NC - Women's Manual Transmission Driving Lessons - “I would like to start a workshop where I teach women how to drive a manual transmission car. I will be using my Volkswagen Beetle, which is very easy to get to know.”
- Isaiah CollinsBiology, Las Vegas, NV - Reselling Business - "I'd like to create a platform where students can resell whatever they like. I've been focused on reselling sneakers and I'd like to create an app where people can join groups and sell their stuff."
- Maritza GonzalezElementary/Special Education Eagle Pass, TX - A Daycare for Students with Children - “I want to do something to help parents with children who want to continue attending college. I would like to start a daycare for college students with children and provide an avenue for educational majors To gain experience ".
- Lola b. hipGraphic Design, Goodland, KS - Photography and Design Business - “I would like to start a name in Photography and Design for myself. It will give an opportunity for students to photograph their cars or themselves or design a logo.”
- Cady B. JohnsonBusiness: Accounting/Finance, Groveton, TX - Photography Business - “I want to start a business in photography. I believe in capturing moments that can forever be considered a true memory of someone.”
- Carson LampakisBusiness Administration, Yukon, OK - A clothing brand focused on mental health - “Develop a clothing brand that gives people the opportunity to express, engage and spread awareness through clothing.”
- Conor McDonaldAuto Restoration, Asheville, AL - Car Rentals - “Normal vehicle repairs take longer due to manufacturing and supply chain constraints, and people are left without transportation. I would like to make additional vehicles I own available for a temporary transportation rental.”
- Matt MahanDepartment of Automotive Restoration, Topeka, KS - Photography Business - “I would like to expand my portfolio by taking more photos of cars, people, buildings, and more around campus and city. Once I have a solid portfolio, I plan to incorporate photography into my career.”
- Christopher J MillerAuto Restoration, West Milton, Ohio Auto Restoration Student Photography "I like to help my fellow students promote themselves and their work in a professional manner and high-quality photos that show what they can do can be very powerful."
- Luis Rodriguez JrBusiness Marketing, The Colony, TX - Music Business - "My goal is to make music that allows me to express myself and entertain listeners."
- Daniel Salina IVHealth Science, Mercedes, TX - Auto detailing business - “I recently started an auto repair business. I would like to get funding for tools, chemicals, and business cards for my business.”
- Robert SchönbernerLtd., Omaha, NE, Automotive Restoration Business - Computer Application Development - “My idea is to create an app for pickup truck drivers to use while on the road that shows everything needed to get from Point A to Point B. Information big trucks need to know to get somewhere quickly ".
- Owen SutherlandSociology, Los Angeles, CA - Fitness/Training Business - “I would like to become a professional track and field coach for levels from beginners to professional athletes. I would like to get a USATF Training Certificate and Personal Training Certificate to help shape people’s bodies and minds in a positive direction.”
- Kushad WashingtonBusiness, Tucson, Arizona - Fitness/Training Business - "I like to give athletes the effective training they need to perform at the highest level, whether it's college or professional. I like to train speed and mechanics, which are the two most important things that athletes need to be successful."
