Q: What does Expert RAW do? What are the main benefits for users?

One who praises: Expert RAW truly gives users the power to have complete control over their mobile photography experience just like a professional photographer would. The app captures more comprehensive data for each photo, which can be used to enhance and technically enhance photos using editing software such as Adobe Lightroom. - The go-to app for professional photographers.

To improve the overall camera experience, we worked closely with Adobe to tightly link Expert RAW with Lightroom. The result is that photographers are in complete control of their creative experience. Novice photographers can also use autofocus points for camera controls, and then use Samsung's default values in Lightroom. Either way, the tight integration between the two apps makes for an enjoyable experience.

Girish: Expert RAW is an epic leap forward for photography. It basically puts a professional studio in your pocket. Whether you're a professional photographer or just a user who wants to capture stunning content, anyone can take full advantage of the Galaxy S22's professional camera with Expert RAW. It captures high-quality, HDR images in multi-frame RAW format that enables precise post-capture editing and professional results.

With Expert RAW, people can capture more information in a single photo - from dark details to bright highlights. It also significantly reduces noise and increases sharpness and detail. If you're looking for the ultimate creative controls, you can choose your own settings for aspects like ISO, shutter speed, white balance, EV and focus, and even choose which lenses you want to use for your subject and scene. Finally, since JPEG and DNG files are saved when shooting, you can go directly to the Adobe Lightroom app on your smartphone or PC and edit with ease.

Q: What was the original inspiration for Expert RAW?

One who praises: Samsung's camera technologies have always relied on advanced computational imaging algorithms to produce the best image quality. However, the standard camera app makes many decisions about how to display an image in terms of color, tone, detail, and noise. The user has a very limited say in these decisions.

Our inspiration came from the confluence of user experience limitations and leaps in the computational capabilities and artificial intelligence of today's mobile processors. We asked ourselves, "How can we make the photography experience more inspiring for users?" So really, our inspiration came from the expert photography community and enthusiasts, who looked forward to an easier mobile photography experience, without sacrificing the creative control that a DSLR and post-shot editing afforded. The RAW expert grew out of a desire to turn that inspiration into a reality.

Girish: Since we heard the input of professional photographers who were mostly using DSLR cameras, they wanted to achieve a professional experience with smartphones. Consumer research also showed that after using the automatic camera in their smartphones for a long time, ordinary users were very excited to deeply explore the potential of Samsung's professional camera to become better photographers.

The more we talk to professional and amateur photographers, the more we understand their needs in terms of RAW capture, camera controls, post-editing experience, creative capabilities and more. That's when we set out to create a new professional experience based on RAW capture so that every level of photographer can integrate the controls and creativity of the camera to enjoy professional-looking photos.

Q: What makes Expert RAW such an important release for mobile photography in general?

One who praises: The camera experience is one of the most important experiences a user has with their smartphone. Samsung has always been at the forefront of camera quality, and the gap between consumers and professional/enthusiast photographers has always tempted its bridge.

I believe that with the Expert RAW edition, users will find that their shooting experience will take a quantum leap in terms of creative control and artistic expression. I expect more and more people will find this new experience rewarding as it allows them to customize their camera based on their tastes - exactly the way they want them - and not based on what some of the other engineers have chosen for them.

Girish: As an app, this platform has simplified the RAW capture process with precise camera and lens controls and post-editing with Adobe Lightroom. It's for every user who wants to go further - to unleash the true power of an expert RAW camera, and explore their creative side.

Q: What role did the MPI Lab play in the development of Expert RAW?

One who praises: Anytime we create a completely new user experience, we have to think about and overcome many challenging engineering challenges. The MPI Lab developed the main idea behind Expert RAW and its techniques, and we knew it was a challenge worth pursuing.

We have developed a completely new computational imaging pipeline that can produce DNG files as well as processed JPEGs. Developing a complex computational imaging pipeline from the start wasn't easy. We no longer have an old, mature technology base to build on. But our team has successfully developed a new AI-based 3DISP technology to produce metadata that looks very natural when users upload it to editing apps like Adobe Lightroom.

Q: What role did SRI-B play in the development of Expert RAW? What are the team's main focus areas?

Girish: Expert RAW was a complex research and development project, and the role of SRI-B was to think from a holistic perspective for the best consumer experience. This requires multi-disciplinary expertise and deep collaboration between multiple teams.

SRI-B is equipped with strong teams with multi-disciplinary expertise, which is why we have put together a team of talented experts. They all worked together as a team within SRI-B and also worked with a larger team of experts based in Korea and at MPI Lab.

Multi-disciplinary expertise and close collaboration with all key stakeholders has helped SRI-B to constantly focus on improving Expert RAW's product experience, end-to-end pipeline, etc.

Q: Can you provide more details about your cooperation with each other?

One who praises: MPI Lab has been working with SRI-B throughout our entire history at Samsung. SRI-B has contributed his impressive skill set and resources to the development of software technologies, as well as the major AI blocks of the Expert RAW pipeline. They also own the UI part of the Expert RAW app and bring several innovations to the Expert RAW experience. It is always fun working with them.

Girish: MPI Lab brings global experience in computational imaging, and has a proven track record of developing successful IP addresses for leading Samsung products. This experience was one of the main requirements for the development of Expert RAW. MPI Lab came to implement the building blocks of multi-framework pipelines, which helped SRI-B integrate and enhance the same end-to-end infrastructure and pipelines.

One of Expert RAW's main expectations was that it would make it possible to obtain the best image quality in different lighting conditions, which would require tuning the multi-frame processing pipeline. MPI's solid experience in this field has helped us continually improve image quality prior to commercial launch. In short, MPI's expertise in computational imaging and breadth of SRI-B knowledge across multiple SRI-B sub-bands helped prepare Expert RAW's comprehensive experience for commercial launch.

SRI-B and MPI Lab effectively used the 12-hour time zone difference for planning and collaboration in Expert RAW. SRI-B day was MPI night, and vice versa. It helped get 24/7 development to finish this complex feature in record time. We are proud of Samsung's culture that enables respectful cooperation between various overseas R&D centers and it has always been a pleasure to work with MPI Lab.

s: How do MPI Lab and SRI-B plan to build on this collaboration to develop more innovative camera technologies?

One who praises: Our journey with the new RAW camera experience has just begun. I'm excited to think of the new improvements and improvements we can make. One of the best parts of the Expert RAW experience is that the photographer is front and center. We will maintain this while actively looking at the experiences of different users and constantly implement improvements to make Expert RAW even better than before.

Girish: MPI Lab and SRI-B have been working together over the past few years to develop the world's best night mode for flagship Samsung smartphones. This collaboration helped us lead to the success story of Expert RAW on the Galaxy S22. We are excited to continue this momentum for upcoming innovative products.

Going forward, we'd like to continue improving Expert RAW with a focus on creating a new professional photography ecosystem that fully utilizes the capabilities of a professional camera.
