The Apple Watch Series 7 wasn’t quite what we thought it would be. It has a slightly larger screen, a few new colors, and slightly faster charging, but other than that, it’s identical to the Apple Watch Series 6, from the chip to the sensors. This means that Series 8 will be the best in 2022. Here’s everything we know about what’s coming.

Apple Watch Series 8: Design
We haven’t heard any specific rumors about the Apple Watch Series 8 design, but we’ve heard a flurry of rumors about a new Series 7 design that didn’t materialize. John Prosser of Front Page Tech reported in May 2021 that Apple is working on a new design for the Apple Watch, with flat edges like the iPhone 13 and iPad mini. In addition, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the 2021 watch will feature an “improved form factor”.
Meanwhile, Bloomberg’s Gurman reported in August that “a little redesign, with flat screens” is expected, while 91mobiles posted CAD renders of the upcoming Apple Watch Series 7 showing a design similar to the Prosser leak, with flat bezels and a thinner bezel. (9 mm vs. 10.7 mm). It’s starting to look like the Apple Watch Series 7 is going to look different but it won’t change much (like a square or round design).
That’s a lot of smoke without a fire, so our intuition tells us that the redesigned Apple Watch was either canceled or delayed. With the massive supply crunch affecting all Apple products, it makes sense that Apple would simply opt for a simpler design in 2021.

Apple Watch Series 8: Display
The Apple Watch Series 7 is available in 41mm and 45mm sizes, which are 1mm more than the Apple Watch Series 6. This is the first increase in size since the Series 4, which introduced the 40mm and 44mm models. However, 2022 may bring another change in screen size.
In mid-2021, Gorman reported that the Series 7 watch would have “updated screen technology” while the 91 phone company added that Apple might use “new lamination technology that is expected to bring the panel closer to the front cover.” While we got thinner bezels and a stiffer coating, the Apple Watch Series 7 appears to use the same overall display technology as previous models. So we’ll be keeping an eye on a new screen operation in the flagship 2022 model.
There may also be a new size in addition to the 41mm and 45mm models. Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants reported in October that people “shouldn’t be surprised” if there will be three models in 2022. That should mean that Apple will introduce a larger model in the 48mm-50mm range. .
Apple Watch Series 8: Health and Fitness Features
While the Apple Watch Series 7 has health features and sensors identical to the Series 6, the next model could bring huge advances. A report from The Telegraph in May 2021 revealed that Apple is a customer of a company that specializes in next-generation health sensors, fueling speculation that future watches will include monitoring of blood pressure, glucose and alcohol level. However, Bloomberg reported in April that while Apple is working on such functionality, it may not be ready until 2024 at the earliest.
A temperature sensor is also being developed. While the feature was originally planned for the Series 7 watch, Bloomberg reported in June 2021 that Apple had pushed the feature back until at least 2022. In April, Gurman reported that the Series 8 watch will have a temperature sensor but that it will use fertility tracking rather than recording actual readings.
In January, Apple stopped selling the Beddit sleep tracker, a device that measures sleep time, heart rate, breathing, snoring, and bedroom temperature and humidity. Apple acquired Beddit in 2017, and it is rumored that it will bring many of its advanced sleep tracking features to the Apple Watch Series 8.
Apple Watch Series 8: “Rugged” model for extreme athletes
Bloomberg’s Mark Gorman reported in December that Apple might launch an Apple Watch with a “durable case,” which could appeal to users who participate in extreme sports and events. Such a watch is supposed to have a more scratch and shock resistant exterior to better rival the rugged Casio and Luminox watches. A durable watch has also been rumored for 2021.

Apple Watch 2022: Processor and Specifications
The technical specifications for the Apple Watch Series 7 list the S7 within the package, but several reports say it’s new in name only. For all intents and purposes, the S7 chip is the same as the S6 chip.
However, Apple was already working on a completely new processor for the Apple Watch Series 7 that had never been seen before. Back in June, a DigiTimes report claimed that Apple would use a new double-sided chip encapsulation process to shrink the size of the S7 chip, potentially making room for more battery or other components, or to shrink the overall thickness of the watch. A follow-up report from China’s Economic Daily News indicated that Apple is freeing up space to make room for a larger capacity battery.
This also did not happen. While Apple doesn’t include the Apple Watch’s battery capacity in the technical specifications, all indications are that it has a similarly sized battery of around 300mAh. So a Series 8 battery update is definitely on the table, especially since reports have been circulating of a major breakthrough on the horizon. for example, Twitter account @pinleaksrun by Max Weinbach and leaking accurate information about AirTag ahead of the “Spring Loaded” event, stated that the Apple Watch Series 7 “is bound to see the first real improvement in battery life since the original Apple Watch.”
Gurman also reported that a new Low Power Mode is slated to arrive in watchOS 9.
Bloomberg previously reported that the Series 7 watch could offer the updated broadband functionality that didn’t arrive. Apple first introduced the ultra-wideband U1 chip with the Apple Watch Series 6 and has since expanded the technology’s usefulness with AirTag trackers and Wallet numeric keys. It’s not clear how Apple will upgrade the technology in the Apple Watch Series 7, but it likely means the U2 chip.
Apple Watch Series 8: Bands
Unlike the Solo Loop bands, which are not compatible with any model prior to the Apple Watch Series 4, Apple supported all previous bands with every Apple Watch model, including the Series 7, so there’s no reason to believe the Series 8 will break that trend. The Series 7 watch introduced a new round of colors, but it didn’t introduce any new strap styles.

Apple Watch SE: 2nd Generation
After Apple neglected the Apple Watch SE in 2021 without much price cuts, Mark Gurman reports that it will be updated in 2022. We haven’t heard any further details, but if Apple follows the same pace, the Apple Watch 2022 SE will be closer to Apple Watch Series 6, with an always-on display and additional sensors (ECG and blood oxygen). If Apple keeps the same $279 price tag, that could be very compelling.
Apple Watch Series 8 and SE: Price and Release
Apple has predictably released a new Apple Watch in early fall since 2016, so the Apple Watch Series 8 and SE will almost certainly arrive in September or October. We expect the pricing to remain the same as well, with the Series 8 starting at $399 and the SE starting at $279. The powerful model will likely cost more, but we need to know more about it.
